AIRLAB – SMART CARRIER HACKATHON
Today’s shopping carts are designed to carry products inside the store. Once the customers are finished shopping, they often use shopping bags to take their groceries home.
What would happen if we combined both the shopping bag and cart into one? We challenge you to design the ideal “smart carrier” – a functional, scalable and sustainable object that helps all consumers simplify and speed up their shopping. This ensures that the consumer can fully focus on their shopping.
If you are a creative student and want to work on a unique concept capable of resetting the shopping rules, this call is for you. Join the AIRLab Smart Carrier Hackathon in partnership with YES!Delft, and help us redefine the future of retail.
The AIRLab Delft is the joint industry lab of Ahold Delhaize and the TU Delft, driving innovations at the intersection of retail, AI and robotics. It recently opened a test site where researchers – supported by RoboValley and tech incubator YES!Delft – can work with partners, students and startups to build and test prototypes of robotic solutions.
THE CHALLENGE
Today, carts and shopping bags are designed for a single task: the former carries the products you buy INSIDE the store, the latter take them home, OUTSIDE of the store.
What would happen if we combined the two factors? We want you to design the ideal “smart carrier” – a functional, scalable and sustainable object that helps all consumers simplify and speed up their shopping. This ensures that the consumer can fully focus on their shopping.
The concept must be:
- Easy to carry, perhaps with one hand engaged with the smartphone for self-scanning;
- Easy to fill, so you can use it while walking in the store;
- Easy to carry, on journeys by bike, public transport or car;
- Easy to empty, to fill your pantry in the blink of an eye;
- Have a purpose at home, on the go and in store.
WHO IS THIS CHALLENGE FOR?
In this challenge, creativity comes first. We are looking for bright, motivated and passionate young people who have a background or are studying in one of these sectors: Industrial Design, Product Design, Arts, Architecture, Fashion.
You can participate as an individual or in groups of 2-4 people. If you join as an individual, you will be paired with at least one other person to form a team.
Indeed, any type of previous work or business experience will be positively evaluated.
Last but not least, we want young people capable of convincing not only with their own ideas but also with a clear message and the right words.
WHAT TO WIN?
The teams presenting the most innovative idea and explaining the rationale behind their design decision will win the hackathon. The following prizes will be awarded:
1st prize € 1.000,00
2nd prize € 500,00
3rd prize € 250,00
Prizes will be divided among your team members.
